Banner Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we gear up for the second semester, the administrative team needs to reinforce the current code of conduct in regards to cell phone use in the building.  With School City of Hammond going 1:1, a chromebook will now be available to your student at all times. This is really exciting news for all students and teachers!

With the new district technology initiative taking place, we feel it is the perfect time to take control of the cell phone problem that is taking place inside our classrooms.  As you know, cell phones can be a major distraction in the school setting. Recent research shows that an individual checks their cell phone on average once every 12 minutes. When looking at teenagers the numbers are even more alarming.  Most of the cell phone usage taking place during the school day has nothing to do with school related items.  Students are constantly distracted and lacking true engagement in the lessons going on right in front of them.  The code of conduct will help us curb cell phone usage in the building.

We are not taking cell phones away from our students.  All students will be able to use their cell phone during breakfast, at lunch, and after school.  The code of conduct allows students to use their cell phone in the classroom when a teacher gives permission and only for instructional reasons.   Again, we are trying to limit the overall usage during school hours. As we move forward and buckle down on cell phones we are in need of your support.  The process will not be easy, but it will be worth it. We ask you to please consider the “why” behind the code of conduct and help us get our students’ attention back to where it needs to be - on their education.

Code of Conduct policy:

  • 1st infraction: teacher intervention/ teacher can ask for phone/ student will get it back at the end of hour

  • 2nd infraction: teacher contacts parents/guardian and sends phone to biz/ student can pick it up after school with school ID

  • 3rd infraction: teacher sends phone to biz/administrator contacts home/parent must pick up phone

  • 4th infraction: teacher sends phone to biz/administrator contacts home/parent must pick up phone/1 to 3 days ISS

  • 5th infraction: teacher sends phone to biz/administrator contacts home/parent must pick up phone/1 to 3 days ISS or 1 day OSS

  • 6th infraction: teacher sends phone to biz/administrator contacts home/parent must pick up phone/1 to 3 days OSS

Respectfully, Clark Administration

EXCITING NEWS FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!!

For those of you I haven’t had a chance to tell yet – I am excited to announce that starting next school year (and guaranteed through June 2023 – woot woot!) we will be providing breakfast and lunch at no cost to ALL students regardless of family income – including middle & high school students! That means no unpaid meal charges, no having to tell secondary students their negative balance is too high, etc.

We are thrilled (especially our cashiers) in our department and hope you are too. The biggest shift (paperwork-wise) for students and families is that they will all need to still fill out a textbook application (there will be no meal applications anymore).

As you will read we have moved up in National rankings! For the 2018 school year we are ranked as a Silver Ranked school- up from last year’s bronze. On behalf of the GRC administration team- THANKS! You all ROCK!

From US News and World Report - Best High Schools:

We released our 2018 Best High Schools rankings this morning, and your Clark is a winner! It was among the elite schools that scored high enough to earn a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Best High Schools “badge”.
Less than 30% of the schools earned the right to display a badge and to be called Best High Schools. U.S. News badges are widely recognized as symbols of excellence in education.

Principal's Message

Dear Students, Staff, and Parents:

I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as head Principal.  At the moment, this is very surreal.  I have been a member of the Clark community since 2005.  Actually, I grew up right across the street on Stanton, where my father still lives.  When I was younger, the kids from the neighborhood and I used to play manhunt and off the wall on school grounds.   I never would have thought that 28 years later, I would be named principal of Clark.  It is my goal to develop and foster a family here at Clark in which every member is respected and recognizes their potential and worth.  We will be working hard to ensure the environment here is safe and academically challenging.  It is our goal to build our students’ confidence in their ability to learn so that they may tackle any and all challenges in their future academic and otherwise.

I have a simple vision; I’m calling it the three A’s.  I believe they are the key to our success.

Attendance - Be present every day. You cannot learn if you are not here!

Attitude
 - Have a positive attitude.  All we want is your best effort daily.

Academics - Students need to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their education.  If they truly apply themselves to learning and achieving they will succeed.

Please know my staff and I are committed to your student’s success.   I know you are too.  It’s time for a true team effort between school and home.  Let’s make it happen.

 Respectfully,
 Dave A. Verta
 Principal
